How to get cat urine smell out of mattress

Bio one™ can help you eliminate cat urine smell from your mattress, which normally lingers around.

There is nothing worse than realising that your beloved pet has made a mess that has penetrated through to your mattress. Mattresses are high priced items that we rely on daily for a good night’s sleep; finding cat urine on your mattress can cause an absolute panic.

Cat pee is rich in ammonia which makes it particularly smelly and difficult to get rid of using traditional cleaners which focus on using chemicals to destroy bacteria. Mattresses are also very thick and are made of several different hard to access layers of fabric, springs, foam, and other materials. If urine soaks through into the middle of the mattress, it can be a challenge to clean up and entirely remove the ammonia smell. In this article, we look at the recommended steps to help you remove the cat urine smell from your mattress.

Immediate cleanup

The key to getting on top of strong odours is to tackle them immediately, as soon as you notice urine on your mattress, you need to take action. Dried cat urine can be more challenging but not impossible to remove. The first step is to get rid of as much urine from the mattress as soon as possible. Strip the bed completely and throw the sheets and duvet into the wash. Using an absorbent towel, cloth or paper towel, dab the urine to wick away excess moisture. This process will help to stop the urine from penetrating the mattress. Keep going with this process until you have removed as much moisture as possible. Avoid rubbing the bed and stick to pressing down firmly with dry pieces of the towel or cloth to wick away the urine.

Enzyme cleaner

Once the excess urine has been removed, it is time to use the enzyme cleaner to neutralise the cat urine odour. You can skip straight to this step if the urine has already dried or if it is an old stain. Enzyme cleaners work using specific enzymes and good bacteria to eat away at the bad bacteria and smell trapped in the fibres of your mattress. They are designed for specific odours and bacteria, such as cat urine, making them a highly effective cat urine remover. The key to getting an enzyme cleaner such as Bio one™ to work is down to the application. The area needs to be fully saturated with the enzyme cleaner for the most effective cleaning.

When applying to a mattress, you will need to spray the surface of the bed liberally with the product mixed to the correct ratio. Then allow time for the product to soak into the mattress so it can tackle the cat urine that has soaked further down. If the accident is near the edge of the mattress we suggest also attacking it from the side as this may help get the enzyme cleaner further into the mattress. If you are cleaning an old stain that has soaked in, you may need to repeat this process several times to remove the cat urine odour effectively.

Enzyme cleaner activation

It is important to shake the pre-mixed Bio one™ enzyme cleaner before application so that the product is evenly distributed and fully mixed together. Enzyme cleaners also take time to work their magic and remove odours such as cat urine. You should allow a minimum of  5-10 minutes after application before taking the next step.

The next step after application and allowing the enzyme cleaner time to work is agitation. Dabbing the affected area with a clean dry cloth will help to work the enzyme cleaner into the mattress fibres, but avoid rubbing the area. When you are removing cat urine from a mattress, you will want to press down firmly to condense and work the cleaner as far into the mattress as possible. Once you have finished agitation, you should leave Bio one™ to completely dry before replacing the sheets and using the mattress again.

Repeat application

Most stains and odours don’t require repeat application as long as the enzyme cleaner has been applied correctly and completely covers the cat urine. However, mattresses that are particularly thick and dense may need a few applications so that the enzyme cleaner can get to the urine within the layers of the mattress. Bio one™ is completely safe for pets and 100% natural, so you can rest assured that your pets will be safe when you are using the product.

What are enzymes?

Don’t be fooled to think that because enzymes are natural they are less effective than chemical cleaners. Enzymes are nature’s very own powerful cleaning tools. Making them the go to choice for pet owners who do not want to spray harmful chemicals around their pets and their home.

Simply put, enzymes are all around us performing millions of important tasks in our bodies and in nature every single day. They are a type of protein that act like a biological catalyst to speed up the break down of organic compounds.

Similarly to how saliva, (which contains enzymes), initiates the digestion process by breaking down food in our mouths, cleaning enzymes use the same ‘enzymatic digestion’ to effectively break down and eradicate the organic proteins present in urine, faeces, vomit, drool, dirt, food, and more.

This process not only makes cleaning easier but also prevents the growth of bad bacteria – the root cause of those unpleasant odours – in the air, on surfaces, and within the fibres of your soft furnishings.

Try out Bio one™ today, vomit and the other nasties is what nature created enzymes for.
