How to get old dog urine smell out of carpet

Keep your carpet odour from your dog's urine with our Bio one™ pet odour eliminator. Follow our step by step guide!

Ever walked into the house of a new dog owner and smelt that familiar but subtle ammonia-rich smell of old dog urine? That smell can linger if it isn’t cleaned up correctly in the first instance.

As homeowners we can become nose blind and no longer notice the odour in our own homes, but if you are away for a short period of time the smell may be detected by you, your guests and your pets.

Carpets are great, they keep our feet cosy and warm and create a homely feel. They’re not so great for pets prone to accidents. Carpets contain many interwoven fibres that absorb moisture easily and keep it locked within, even when a stain has been cleaned up, it can come back once dried, or the carpet can smell a little funky. Getting rid of strong odours such as dog pee can be even more of a challenge. Then there is the issue with the colour fading or the texture becoming different in the area you are treating. Carpets need effective but targeted cleaning.

In this article, we take a look at how to get rid of old dog urine smell out of carpet using carpet cleaner for dog pee, whilst also protecting your pets. We list all of the equipment and knowledge you need to banish the smell for good without needing to pay for new flooring.

What you need

There are only a few things you need to successfully remove old dog urine smell from the carpet. These are:

Step one – find the smell

To effectively treat and remove the urine smell, you need to find the source. There might be one or several patches where your dog has peed, locating these spots is the first step. You can use your own nose to find these, or you can get your dog to help. They are likely to keep urinating in the same spots. If your dog has a sniff around and seems interested in certain areas then they are good places to start. If you have a lighter colour carpet or pattern, you can also look for colour or texture changes to indicate the source of the smell.

Step two – grab your enzymes

Enzymes are natural own cleaning army when it comes to pet urine. Enzyme’s naturally target and eliminator the carbon based matter that bad bacteria grows on, which is the cause of the bad lingering odour. Enzymes work by way of enzymatic digestion, simply breaking down and digesting the cause of the odour and thus removing it completely.

Using an enzymatic cleaner such as Bio one™ Pet Odour Remover and Refresher, mix up the recommended amount of Bio one™, the instructions can be found on the bottle. Once mixed, spray the areas containing old dog urine well, make sure to saturate all of the carpet fibres thoroughly. Slightly agitate the area to ensure then enzymes are getting into the fibres of the carpet. The site should be visibly damp, this is especially important when cleaning old urine stains that are embedded into the carpet fibres.

Step three – patience

It is important to give the enzymes enough time to break down the bacteria within the fibres. This usually takes a minimum 5-10 minutes, but extra time can be added for stubborn or very old odours. Enzymes continue to work whilst damp, do make sure that you do not allow the area to dry up.

Step four – agitate

Once you have given the enzymes at least 5 minutes, you need to get your clean cloth and agitate the area. This helps to spread the enzyme cleaner further into every fibre of the carpet. At this point, you can also dab away excess moisture.

Step five – leave to dry

Once treated, leave the area to air dry. The enzyme cleaner will continue to work to get those last particles of bacteria and leave your carpet clean and smelling great.

What are enzymes?

Don’t be fooled to think that because enzymes are natural they are less effective than chemical cleaners. Enzymes are nature’s very own powerful cleaning tools. Making them the go to choice for pet owners who do not want to spray harmful chemicals around their pets and their home.

Simply put, enzymes are all around us performing millions of important tasks in our bodies and in nature every single day. They are a type of protein that act like a biological catalyst to speed up the break down of organic compounds.

Similarly to how saliva, (which contains enzymes), initiates the digestion process by breaking down food in our mouths, cleaning enzymes use the same ‘enzymatic digestion’ to effectively break down and eradicate the organic proteins present in urine, faeces, vomit, drool, dirt, food, and more.

This process not only makes cleaning easier but also prevents the growth of bad bacteria – the root cause of those unpleasant odours – in the air, on surfaces, and within the fibres of your soft furnishings.
