How to get rid of cat pee smell

That cat pee smell linger around the house and over time we don't even notice it. Use our Bio one™ to effectively eliminate you cat's pee smell.

Cat pee, urine, accidents, whoopsies or whatever you want to call it, is an issue which many of us cat owners face on a regular basis. Cat pee has a very distinctive and pungent odour which you can often still smell after the area has been thoroughly cleaned with your traditional cleaners.

In this article we help you find the best approach to getting rid of the cat pee smell for good, whether it’s on your carpet, soft furnishings or hard surfaces.

Immediate clean up

If the accident is fresh there are a couple of things you can do to help immediately minimise the impact of the potential lingering smell.

Step 1

Firstly blot the urine to soak up as much of it as you can, doing this will take the pee away from the surface the accident happened on and into your cloth or paper towel. Try not to rub the area too much, rubbing can spread the pee around and you will have a larger area to deal with.

Step 2

The next step is to use an enzyme cleaner such as Bio one™ on the area. Saturate the pee soaked area with the correctly made up product and leave the enzymes to get to work for at least 5 to 10 minutes. This is enough time for the enzyme to eat away at the odour causing bacteria within the urine.  If you don’t have an enzyme cleaner to hand we suggest using mild pet safe dish soap and water until you are able to get hold of an enzymatic cleaner. Enzyme cleaners are proven to be the best cat urine removers and work in harmony with your pets.

Step 3

Agitate the area and then leave to dry. You should find the cat pee smell has been completely removed without causing any harm to your pets or the affected areas. You’ll be left with a lovely smelling carpet or furnishings.

Old cat pee stains

You may not have an enzymatic cleaner such as Bio one™ to hand when an accident happens, leaving you with an old cat pee smell that is embedded into the fibres of your carpet or other soft furnishings. Or, you may have just moved and found the distinctive odour of cat urine in your new home. Don’t worry Bio one™works on old smells and stains as well as fresh accidents, and the process is very much the same.

For older accidents you’re going to want to really make sure you have saturated the area with Bio one™. Spray over the area multiple times until it is very wet to touch. Once the whole area has been completely saturated with the enzyme cleaner you need to wait a while for the enzymes to work their magic and eat away at the bad bacteria which actually causes the smell. We suggest with older stains to wait longer before agitating the area, try 30 minutes to start with before rubbing and removing the leftover residue. If you can still smell the area try waiting longer on the next application, you can even leave Bio one™ to work overnight, however, the area must remain wet in order to work, so multiple applications may be necessary. Bio one is a completely safe cat urine remover made from natural ingredients that won’t harm your pets.

For really old stubborn smells you may need to do several applications of Bio one™ to get to every single fibre that contains the cat urine. To do this simply repeat the process making sure to saturate the area each time and allow the enzymes enough time to work. However, repeat applications are seldom needed as long as the first application completely covers the affected area.

Prevent further incidents

To prevent further accidents the first step is to make sure that the area is completely cleaned. Animals will often go back to the area again and pee over it if they can still smell some of the urine. Cats’ sense of smell is over 14x better than humans and they use their incredible sense of smell to identify people and objects, finding their own urine is an easy task.

Another way to prevent further accidents is to provide additional litter trays or increase how regularly the litter trays in your household are cleaned. Some cats will not go in a litter tray which contains pee or poo. If you have a multiple cat household this can be an issue, cats may avoid litter trays that have been used by the other cats in their household. Providing at least one litter tray per cat and regularly cleaning them out will help to prevent issues and accidents.

What are enzymes?

Don’t be fooled to think that because enzymes are natural they are less effective than chemical cleaners. Enzymes are nature’s very own powerful cleaning tools. Making them the go to choice for pet owners who do not want to spray harmful chemicals around their pets and their home.

Simply put, enzymes are all around us performing millions of important tasks in our bodies and in nature every single day. They are a type of protein that act like a biological catalyst to speed up the break down of organic compounds.

Similarly to how saliva, (which contains enzymes), initiates the digestion process by breaking down food in our mouths, cleaning enzymes use the same ‘enzymatic digestion’ to effectively break down and eradicate the organic proteins present in urine, faeces, vomit, drool, dirt, food, and more.

This process not only makes cleaning easier but also prevents the growth of bad bacteria – the root cause of those unpleasant odours – in the air, on surfaces, and within the fibres of your soft furnishings.

Try out Bio one™ today, vomit and the other nasties is what nature created enzymes for.
