How to get rid of the smell of dog urine

Accidents can happen at anytime. There's no need to worry if your dog has had accident, we've got you covered with our tips!

No matter how old your dog is, little accidents can happen from time to time. Whether you’ve just welcomed a new puppy into your family or your dog has been part of your life for many years, little puddles can suddenly appear around your home.

Or, if you’ve been out for a while, you might have missed the puddle altogether, leaving just an unpleasant smell behind.

If your dog has had a little oopsie, there’s no need to worry. Take a look at our cleaning hints and tips to get rid of the smell of dog urine for good.

Why does dog urine smell so bad?

Just like human urine, dog urine is a mixture of different (and slightly smelly) elements. Hormones, bacteria and uric acid are all present in dog urine, but it’s the ammonia, a natural waste product, that causes the distinctive and unpleasant odour that dog urine produces. Ammonia is also the element that causes visible stains and makes dog urine smells tricky to remove, particularly in soft furnishings, carpets, beddings and any other absorbent materials.

It is worth noting that, although dog urine will have a mildly unpleasant smell, the odour shouldn’t change or be completely overwhelming. If this is the case, and your dog seems a little under the weather, then they might be suffering from a bacterial urinary infection and should be checked by a vet. It is also worth getting your dog checked by the vet if urinating inside is a new behaviour that is unexpected or out of character.

What neutralises dog urine?

Ammonia and other smelly elements make dog urine a particularly stubborn stain to remove. All of these elements are alkaline, meaning they have a low pH score and can, in theory, be counteracted and removed by mild acids. However, mild acids aren’t just potentially harmful to pets but are too harsh to apply to soft furnishing and carpets without damaging them.

Luckily, some alternative dog urine cleaner products are available that use natural and less harmful substances to remove stubborn stains and odours like dog urine. Unlike dog deodorising sprays that cover up or mask the smell, or DIY removers that can harm your surfaces or pets, enzyme cleaners for dog urine contain natural bacteria that biodegrade and break down stubborn dirt without damaging furnishings or harming pets.

Bio one ™ is simple to use and can easily remove the smell of dog urine. Before application, remove any excess dog urine if the patch is still wet. The next step is to mix the concentrated Bio one ™ enzyme dog cleaner with  water, as directed on the side of the bottle. Always make sure to shake your pre-mixed Bio one ™ product before every application.

Then spray it liberally onto the patch of dog urine until it is saturated with product. If you’ve not used your cleaner before, test a small patch first if spraying onto delicate fabrics. Then, once you’ve sprayed, leave the cleaner for five to ten minutes to let the enzymes work before wiping it with a clean, damp cloth and letting it air dry naturally. If you have a particularly old or stubborn dog urine stain, you may need to repeat the process.

Bio one™ enzyme cleaner can be used all around your home as a regular cleaning product. To remove general dog smells from the air or furniture, you can include Bio one ™ into your normal cleaning routine. Keep a bottle of mixed Bio one ™ on hand to clean up any unexpected accidents or ‘oops moments’. You never know when your pet might vomit, poo, or pee unexpectedly.

What are enzymes?

Don’t be fooled to think that because enzymes are natural they are less effective than chemical cleaners. Enzymes are nature’s very own powerful cleaning tools. Making them the go to choice for pet owners who do not want to spray harmful chemicals around their pets and their home.

Simply put, enzymes are all around us performing millions of important tasks in our bodies and in nature every single day. They are a type of protein that act like a biological catalyst to speed up the break down of organic compounds.

Similarly to how saliva, (which contains enzymes), initiates the digestion process by breaking down food in our mouths, cleaning enzymes use the same ‘enzymatic digestion’ to effectively break down and eradicate the organic proteins present in urine, faeces, vomit, drool, dirt, food, and more.

This process not only makes cleaning easier but also prevents the growth of bad bacteria – the root cause of those unpleasant odours – in the air, on surfaces, and within the fibres of your soft furnishings.

Try out Bio one™today, vomit and the other nasties is what nature created enzymes for.
