Ingredients
GOOD TO KNOW
- No testing of products or ingredients on animals by ourselves or any suppliers
- No animal ingredients – suitable for vegetarians.
- No unnecessary or harmful preservatives or ingredients.
- No genetically modified ingredients.
Some formulations are preservative free. However in others it is necessary to use preservatives to protect against common pathogens including staphicocollus and candida (fungus). Where natural preservatives are inadequate we use minimal levels of food grade broad-spectrum preservatives with a proven safety record.
All our products are formulated to be gentle even to those with sensitive skins. However as a common sense precaution we recommend spot testing prior to use.
All products conform to the latest statutory regulations and meet the strict requirements of Trading Standards and The Medicines Control Agency.
SKINCARE PRODUCTS
At Aroma Care Solutions we love natural ingredients; we use them whenever we can, choose our sources carefully, and we ensure that they can benefit you as well as supporting a clean planet. Our ingredients are chosen by experts to deliver the performance you need as a carer. We take our responsibilities very seriously and this is reflected in the product and the company. You can plainly see that every ingredient we use has a purpose and has been carefully thought about.
Naturally Sourced and Derived
Almost all of our skincare ingredients originate from nature but in some products we do have to use a miniscule amount of manmade ingredients to ensure that the products are always safe, healthy, and effective.
Man-made ingredients are largely used as preservatives. Effective preservatives are essential for safety, especially as we are using large quantities of natural and organic ingredients from sustainable plant sources subject to negligible pesticide application.
Many people who are being cared for have lowered immune systems so they would be especially vulnerable to bacterial or fungal contamination, which can occur in products if they are not preserved effectively.
Indeed you will probably already be aware that in order for some natural ingredients to deliver high performance results they go through some processing before making their way into the final product. We use the terms “sourced” and “derived” as classifications for how much the ingredient has changed from how it is found in the source plant or mineral.
We classify an ingredient as “naturally sourced organic” when the ingredient is not significantly changed from how it occurs in the identified organic source material. An example of this is chamomile oil. The chamomile is exactly as we have bought it from a farmer in East Anglia. Natural and organic derived ingredients have gone through additional processing which modifies how they are found in their natural state. This is generally done to improve the ingredient’s safety or performance.
We have prepared a list of the ingredients we use to demonstrate our commitment to gentle products that are highly effective and made with mostly natural ingredients. In the skincare range in particular, there is a high percentage of certified organic content.
Please contact us with any questions or comments: we welcome your feedback and are always pleased to hear from you.
What is NOT in our products
Animal Ingredients
The majority of our products are suitable for vegans, as we have worked to find plant-based alternatives for ingredients that are typically made from animal ingredients. For example, the glycerin used in many products can be an animal ingredient, while ours is plant-based.
The exception is that in some products we do use beeswax, which is not suitable for vegans. We also use lanolin, which comes from sheep’s fleece.
Genetically Modified Ingredients
None of our natural oils and butters or botanical ingredients or any other ingredients comes from GM plant sources.
Ethylene Glycol
Ethylene glycol can be found in hair care products and facial/body washes as a fragrance ingredient, a solvent and as an aid in controlling viscosity. Instead, we use water and ingredients derived from corn, coconut and palm kernel oils and sea salt to control consistency in our body washes and natural fragrances in all of our products.
Gluten
All of the products we currently manufacture are gluten-free.
Parabens
Parabens are used as fragrance ingredients or as preservatives – but not in our products.
Peroxides
We do not use bleach or peroxide.
Phthalates
Phthalates are used to improve the performance of some personal care/cosmetic products (for example, to fix fragrance in a formula), but we have always avoided this class of ingredient.
SKINCARE PRODUCTS INGREDIENTS
Alcohol Denat
Used in Aroma Care Solutions Skincare products because of its cleansing and antibacterial properties. It helps solubilise the essential oils in the products so that they can mix with the water-based ingredients. Almost every type of skincare product lists it as an ingredient but some people worry that it might be drying. At the low concentration we use, it is not drying.
Denat means denatured alcohol whereby a small amount of denaturant is added to ethyl alcohol to make the raw ingredient taste bad so that it cannot find its way into the alcohol-for-consumption sector.
Alkyl Benzoate
A softening emollient that works well with oil-based products and leaves the skin conditioned and silky to the finish. It originates from natural chemical components found in benzoin, cranberries and coconut oil.
Benzyl Alcohol
Benzyl alcohol is a natural constituent of several essential oils, including ylang ylang, jasmine and benzoin. It has powerful antiseptic and antibacterial properties even at very low doses, which makes it an effective and popular preservative. It is a very commonly used ingredient in the hospital and medical environment and is normally in the antibacterial solution surrounding common drugs that are injected. It is also a topical local anaesthetic used by a nurse or doctor on the skin before giving an injection.
Aloe Vera (Organic)
The soothing, calming Aloe Vera plant is one of the most revered in nature. Taken from the plant’s juicy fronds, aloe vera gel holds moisture whilst being easily absorbed as it has the same pH balance as our skin.

Polyacrylate Polymer
This is a super-absorbent product that we use to make the liquid ingredients in our hand sanitiser into a gel. This is important for hygiene as it allows the product to be spread thoroughly over the hands and stay on the skin to kill the bacteria and viruses rather than running off or evaporating.
Potassium Sorbate
A food-grade preservative derived from sorbic acid, which is naturally found in the berries of the mountain ash tree.
Propylene Glycol
Along with other glycols and glycerol, this is a food-grade humectant to help add moisture to the skin. It also improves “glide” so that the product can be applied smoothly to the skin and has a silky feel.

HOMECARE PRODUCTS INGREDIENTS
Bacillus Subtilis
Bacillus subtilis is a bacterium that is commonly found in our digestive systems to aid digestion. It does this by secreting rather useful enzymes that can break down dangerous bacteria in the gut, helping us not to become ill. Due to its ability to break down harmful bacteria in the home using enzymes, this eco-friendly substance is very effective at removing odours from carpets, sink and wet room plug holes where debris has caught and is causing odours. It is used in our bio-enzyme cleaner to digest the proteins left behind where there have been bodily fluid spills (vomit and faeces in particular) or food spills.
Butyl Glycol
Butyl glycol is also something that is used regularly in most households as it is a component of many home-cleaning products. It provides very good cleaning power for domestic cleaning products and provides the fresh characteristic odour that we associate with many of these products. This rather useful substance does not evaporate readily therefore it allows the maintenance of our natural products, keeping them fresher for the longer.
Chamomilla Recutita (Roman Chamomile) Flower Extract
Chamomile (matricaria recutita) is a flowering plant belonging to the daisy family. It is also known as Hungarian chamomile and true chamomile. The plant is indigenous to Asia and Europe and is used for several therapeutic purposes. The essential oil extracted from chamomile has been in use for more than 2000 years for treating conditions. Chamomile essential oil is obtained from the freshly dried white flowers of this herb. Chamomile is also effective for treating skin conditions, especially for comforting irritated skin.
Chelating Agent
A chemical compound that has the ability to bind strongly with metal ions.
Citral
Citral is a naturally occurring component of essential oils including lemongrass oil and the oils of verbena, lemon myrtle, lemon and orange. Some Aroma Care Solutions products are formulated with lemon essential oil and therefore citral is listed. Some people report possible allergies to citral in large doses but in the small and very safe doses we use, it is at a very safe level and brings benefits. The main benefit of citral is that it has strong antimicrobial qualities, so it is the perfect natural ingredient for us to use in the Aroma Care Solutions range of hygiene and cleaning products.
Citronellol
Citronellol is a naturally occurring component of essential oils including rose which we use in Aroma Care Solutions products. It has strong antifungal and antibacterial properties and repels insects. It can be used effectively throughout the home as a safe and effective hygienic ingredient. In aromatherapy, oils containing citronellal as a key ingredient are used because they are believed to calm anxiety.
Citrus Paradisi Grapefruit Essential Oil (Organic)
A deliciously scented oil to lift the spirits and energise the mind and body. Popular for use by aromatherapists in detox blends and an effective antibacterial agent.
Disodium EDTA
A very popular chelating ingredient for maintaining the clarity of the natural perfumes. It is most commonly used in hospitals in transfused blood to maintain purity.
Ethyl Benzalkonium Chloride
This is an effective alternative to bleach that avoids the chemical risks and odour which can aggravate nausea in people whose health is compromised. It also avoids the toxic pollution that bleach delivers to the environment. It is a modern active ingredient in surgical disinfecting not least because, unlike bleach, it does not cause a burning sensation when in contact with the skin.
It is an effective disinfectant against bacteria and most viruses. It is a biocide which also kills algae (a risk in bath and wet rooms) and will minimise undesired biological growth. The main advantages are that it is odourless, non-staining and non-toxic at the low doses we have included in Aroma Care Solutions products. As an antibacterial sanitising agent it exhibits a wide-ranging germicidal activity when used even in hard water. It is effective over the wide pH range that one will encounter in the domestic home and on the skin of different people including those whose health is compromised. It leaves a safe, non-volatile residue on surfaces to which it is applied, rendering the surfaces bacteria-resistant for a given time.
Eugenol
Eugenol is a naturally occurring chemical component of essential oils including rose and clove. As rose essential oil is included in some Aroma Care Solutions products, eugenol is listed in the ingredients, but it is not added to products independently. It is stimulating and aromatic in nature and is an effective antibacterial agent. It comprises around 90% of the chemical make up of clove; oil of cloves is often used as a remedy for toothache as it is believed eugenol has pain-relieving properties.
Geraniol
Geraniol is a pale-yellow oil-like liquid (although pure geraniol is a colourless). It has a sweet rose aroma. Geraniol occurs naturally in essential oils, such as geranium, rose and lemon, which are included in Aroma Care Solutions products: therefore we don’t list it, as it is not an additional ingredient.
Isopropanol
At Aroma Care Solutions we actively look to use ONLY chemicals that are safe for the environment for wildlife (particularly fish) and humans. One of the major pluses in using Isopropanol is that it is frequently used in the extraction and purification of natural products such as vegetable fats and oils. Isopropanol is used to dissolve grease and oil such as you would find in food spills or hand and fingerprints and smears. It evaporates quickly which is ideal for instance for a chair-side table that you might wish to put your newspaper back down on. It leaves nearly zero traces of grease and oil and is non-toxic, compared to any alternatives such as ethanol. It has such a good safety record that it is commonly used on human skin and typically nurses use it to clean skin prior to giving an injection. It also commonly used to disinfect ears after swimming for those susceptible to ear infections.
Lauramine Oxide
This is an amine oxide that is gentle and used mostly in hair care products as a foam builder and stabiliser. We use it in our products to help lift dirt and to stop ingredients in the products separating over time.
Lavandula Angustifolia
Lavender is a perennial, shrub-like plant that is part of the mint family. It is popular for its colourful flowers, its fragrance and its ability to survive with low water consumption. The essential oil is obtained from the flowering tops of the plants through steam distillation. Lavender oil is used for its balancing and soothing qualities; it is great at calming the mind and aiding a restful sleep.
Lemon Essential Oil (Organic) Citrus Limonum
A deliciously scented favourite used extensively by most of the contemporary fragrance houses, it has a fresh zesty scent to awaken the senses and revive the tired body. The Ancient Egyptians believed that lemons offered effective protection against a variety of poisons. Modern aromatherapists use lemon for its antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting powers. Lemon has long been respected for its ability to lift the spirits and is often recommended for stress-related fatigue.
Limonene
A naturally occurring component of essential oils such as the lemon that we use in our formulation. It is a natural ingredient which acts as an effective solvent to dissolve and clean away greasy handprints or food spills. A few media reports suggest that some people are allergic to it. In large quantities any ingredient, natural or not, may cause irritation but in the low level we use it, it is a very effective and skin-kind solution to the problem of grease.
Limonene is a colourless liquid with a light, fresh, and sweet citrus odour. It is naturally occurring in essential oils such as lime, lemongrass, neroli, grapefruit, tangerine and many others. It gives a fresh scent to products and supports the preservative function.
Its cleansing properties are well-known and it also has an effective stain-removing function. Many aromatherapists recommend oils high in limonene as a boost to the immune system.
Linalool
Linalool is also a naturally occurring component of the essential oils that are in our formulations. Aromatherapists use essential oils high in linalool as it is believed to be an effective antidote to stress especially where there are feelings of anger.
Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree)
Tea tree oil helps to break down dirt and oil and has deodorising properties.
Tea tree oil is steam-distilled from the foliage of the tea tree; a small tree belonging to the myrtle (myrtaceae) family which is native to Australasia. Women are said to have traditionally used the tree bark to wrap their children in, which acted as a kind of antiseptic protection against chills and bacteria.
To create the tea tree oil, the leaves are collected and steam-distilled locally. The oil smells warm, spicy and fresh and has been scientifically proven to be antibacterial, antifungal and particularly effective against the types of fungi we call yeasts.
Its primary use is to prevent or inhibit the growth and reproduction of microorganisms in finished products. It also functions as a foam booster and as a detergent, where it helps water to mix with oil and dirt so that they can be rinsed away quickly and easily for an effective and convenient cleaning solution.
Mentha Piperata (Peppermint)
Peppermint oil is extracted by steam distillation from the dark green leaves and purple flowers of the herbaceous plant.
The ancient Egyptians, one of the most medically-advanced ancient cultures, cultivated and used peppermint leaves for indigestion. The ancient Romans and Greeks also took peppermint to soothe their stomachs. Peppermint comes from the word mente meaning the mind as it is believed to counteract fatigue. It is commonly used as a natural anti-nausea ingredient and soothes headaches
Methyl Benzalkonium Chloride
Benzalkonium chloride is used as a preservative, antiseptic, disinfectant, solubilising agent and wetting agent. Its safety record is so good that it is commonly used as a preservative in contact lens solutions. It is vital that no pathogens grow in contact lens solutions because any bacterial or fungal infection in the eyes can potentially lead to blindness. Also contact lens solution is something that will come into contact with your eyes every day so the chemicals in the formulation have to be extra safe.
Natural Colour
Here at Aroma Care Solutions we love natural ingredients and they are our passion. The natural colours we use do not contain any toxins and are completely safe to use every day around the home. The reason products are coloured (to a minimal level) is for safety. Not everyone finds it easy to see or read labels and the colour makes it easy to quickly identify the product that one needs.
Panax Ginseng Root Extract
Ginseng is a herbal compound that has been used for thousands of years and is well-known for its multiple benefits. Panax ginseng, also known as Korean ginseng, represents the original true ginseng with the highest potency of the main ingredients, ‘ginsenosides’.
Ginseng is believed to support the immune system and it also has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.
Parfum (Fragrance)
Parfum is a mixture of aroma compounds and fragrant essential oils delivering a fine, high quality fragrance to the products. All the fragrances are designed by our in-house aromatherapist Julie Foster to smell exquisite and avoid the nausea that sometimes accompanies product fragrances.
The inspiration for the perfumes came from an English garden because Julie felt that when people are being cared for and in cases where they are immobile, the smell of the garden is something they miss. Similarly, our Fresh Green fragrance is inspired by the smells that one would experience walking through wet grass or woodland.
Our fragrances are blended to the very highest premium standard with the finest ingredients but none is overly sweet, so all are suitable for men and women.
Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium)
In aromatherapy geranium is used as a holistic treatment to boost emotional health. Historically it was used by the Egyptians to promote beauty as well as calming anxiety. This sweet-smelling oil can also lift the mood, lessen fatigue and promote emotional wellness.
Geranium oil is non-toxic, non-irritant and generally non-sensitising and is one of the safest and mildest essential oils.
Sodium Bicarbonate
A food-grade ingredient with powerful deodorising properties and a gentle non-irritating presence.
Sodium Chloride (Salt)
Salt (sodium chloride) is a powerful microbial inhibitor which means that it prevents the growth of bacteria. It is a popular ingredient for us at Aroma Care Solutions as a natural preservative as well as for its cleansing antibacterial properties.
Sodium chloride is essential to human life and is found throughout our human tissues and body fluids. Therefore, as an ingredient in our antibacterial cleansing products, it is very well tolerated by those in proximity to the area that has been cleaned.
Salt, with its non-toxicity and status and as an endlessly abundant and sustainable resource, is the perfect choice for use in our eco-friendly cleaning products.
Surfactants
Surfactants do the heavy lifting in terms of removing dirt and soilage from a range of surfaces. Anionic surfactants create foam and work to remove soils from the surface by lifting and suspending particles in “bubble-like” arrangements called micelles. Non-ionic surfactants emulsify oil particles so they can be removed the from the surface. We have selected surfactants that are both effective and mild to the skin and environment.
Symphytum Officinale (Comfrey)
A member of the borage family, comfrey is native to Europe and Asia. Comfrey has been cultivated as a healing herb since at least 400BC. The Greeks and Romans commonly used comfrey as a soothing herb for chest problems and pain. At Aroma Care Solutions we have chosen to use it in our formulations because of this history.
Our customers have told us that one of the worst things about standard cleaning products is the fact that if they smell bad or institutional it can make their chest feel tight or stimulate feelings of nausea. For many people being cared for – particularly if they are on strong drugs or chemotherapy – a soothing non-irritating and pleasant scent helps.
Tegotain AFB (Preservative)
Tegotain AFB is a synergistic blend of betaines which are derived from plant oils such as coconut oil and biodegrade easily. Betaines have effective hygienic cleansing properties and are effective preservatives against bacteria and fungus. They are chosen for use in modern, more natural environmentally-friendly formulations such as those from Aroma Care Solutions because they are kind to skin and avoid irritation. Another reason why this ingredient is included in the Aroma Care Solutions portfolio is because it has antistatic properties so dust build up after cleaning will be much slower.
Trisodium Nitrilotriacetate
Commonly used to clean floors and work tops in hospitals because of its specialist function and high performance, it can irritate the skin and eyes if used in 100% concentrated form or applied directly to the skin. We have used our expertise to dilute it to a safe level that will not cause irritation but will still deliver the hospital-grade, high performance cleaning and hygiene solution that is critical in a caring situation where you need fast, effective, reliable and convenient solutions.
When dirt or general spills – including food or body fluids, dust, pet debris, bacteria and insect contamination – are wiped away, some of the debris is inevitably left, typically in cracks, textile joins and textured surfaces. Some of the chemicals and minerals in the debris quickly undergo chemical changes and cause a hard build-up of scale. What starts as invisible becomes visible as it builds up: it traps more dirt and provides the perfect surface for more pathogens including bacteria and fungus to build up. Trisodium nitrilotriacetate can easily solve this problem, reverse the chemical reaction that caused the scaling so that it can be wiped away effectively with the dirt and bacteria too. This is why we use this ingredient – in a safe, diluted form – in our products. Finally, it is stable in warm temperatures (as often found in care homes and houses where invalids live) maintaining our products’ integrity. It is 100% biodegradable and, when formulated responsibly as we do, 100% safe for us and the environment.
