Caring for your baby is so rewarding, it’s full of joyful moments. Parents experience middle of the night cuddles, baby’s first smile, first word and step. Life is also full of messy moments too. Top of the list is changing nappies…
It’s unpleasant whichever way you look at it. If you use a nappy bin to store them, you’ll be all too familiar with the lingering pongs that come from it. Luckily, if you use the right products, you can eliminate odours easily…
What makes a nappy bin smell?
The cause of nasty pongs in your nappy bin is pretty obvious. It’s the poo and pee from your little one. Human waste is naturally smelly but that odour will get worse over time as the nappies are left to fester in the bin. This is because bacteria start to build up, releasing gases into the air. The main culprit behind bad smelling faeces is skatole but there’s also thiols (which contains stinky sulphur), amines and carboxylic acids. The pongiest part of urine is ammonia. When someone is dehydrated, their wee will contain more ammonia and less water which makes the smell even stronger. Once your baby moves to solid food, it’s likely their poo will smell stronger too.
What’s the best odour eliminator for nappy bins?
The best way to make nappy bins smell better is with a powerful cleaner and odour eliminator. You need a product that removes bad bacteria and the smell – instead of just masking it. We pride ourselves on creating products that do just that and are designed specifically for use around babies and toddlers, and is 100% natural. Bio One™ Baby + Toddler Surface Cleaner, uses naturally activating enzymes to disinfect, clean up, eliminator and prevent odour any hard or soft surface. It removes 99% of bacteria (which causes the pong) without using harsh chemical ingredients – just organic plant power.
How to clean a nappy bin
Remove the waste
It’s impossible to clean a nappy bin that’s packed with poo. So it’s time to get rid of the stuff that’s causing the unpleasant pong. Tie up your nappy sack with a tight and secure knot to make sure no mess escapes. Carefully lift it out and dispose of the waste in your outside bin.
Give the bin a clean
Now the bin is empty, you need to get cleaning. First, gather your supplies: a pair of gloves to protect your hands, a cloth or paper towel and your trusty Bio One™. Mix the solution as per the instructions or by using the markers on your mix + spray bottle.
Cleaning a nappy bin with Bio One™:
1. Spray the entire bin with Bio One™. Make sure the surface is completely covered and damp with the solution.
2. Leave the formula to work its magic for five to ten minutes. This gives the powerful enzymes a chance to digest and breakdown the bad bacteria and grime.
3. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and leave to air dry.
4. If it needs extra work, respray and leave for five more minutes before repeating Step 3.
5. Wait until the bin is completely dry before adding in a new liner.
Refresh your liner
Once your bin has dried naturally, you can pop in a new liner. Make sure you choose a nappy sack that’s strong and durable so it won’t rip easily. If you’re filling a large bin with dirty nappies, it will need to take the weight of all that waste. You don’t want to risk any tears and stinky spills.
How often should I clean my nappy bin?
Nappy bins need a quick clean every time you change a liner. Bacteria from dirty nappies can harbour on the inside surface of your bin, which ultimately will be a breading ground for bad bacteria and odour. Each time you remove a liner, simply spray the nappy bin or a simple wipe down with a cloth or paper towel soaked with Bio One™. Regular use of Bio One™ will prevent bad odour and bacteria from developing.
Do nappy sacks stop the smell?
Nappy sacks definitely help contain the smell. Just like any liner, they also stop the waste getting directly onto the surfaces of your bin. Using a nappy sack makes emptying or cleaning your nappy bin more hygienic and a lot simpler. When it’s full, you can easily pull them out, throw the liner and its contents away, before replacing with a fresh one.
What are enzymes?
Don’t be fooled to think that because enzymes are natural they are less effective than chemical cleaners. Enzymes are nature’s very own powerful cleaning tools. Making them the go to choice for parents who do not want to spray harmful chemicals around their children and their home.
Simply put, enzymes are all around us performing millions of important tasks in our bodies and in nature every single day. They are a type of protein that act like a biological catalyst to speed up the break down of organic compounds.
Similarly to how saliva, (which contains enzymes), initiates the digestion process by breaking down food in our mouths, cleaning enzymes use the same ‘enzymatic digestion’ to effectively break down and eradicate the organic proteins present in urine, faeces, vomit, drool, dirt, food, and more.
This process not only makes cleaning easier but also prevents the growth of bad bacteria – the root cause of those unpleasant odours – in the air, on surfaces, and within the fibres of your soft furnishings.
Try out Bio one today, vomit and the other nasties is what nature created enzymes for.
