When our pets have an accident on hard surfaces, it’s often a lot easier to wipe up and remove. However, when it happens on clothes, fabric or worse still, your precious leather sofa, it’s a bit trickier.
Here’s our best tips for removing fresh or dried cat urine, stains and odours with an enzymatic cleaner.
How do you get fresh cat urine out of leather?
1. Remove excess urine
If the urine is fresh so that the stain is still wet and visible, wipe off any excess first. You can do this by simply blotting the mark with a clean towel or a paper towel. Always blot gently, without rubbing the stain into the leather or fabric.
2. Use an enzymatic cleaner
An enzymatic cat urine cleaner, like Bio one™ will break down the uric acid, within the cat urine, to remove any bacteria. This makes enzyme cleaners much more effective than other general cleaning products. However, because these types of cleaner break down the stains, always check that it’s safe for use on leather first to ensure it doesn’t leave a watermark. You can test a hidden area of the couch, such as part of the furniture which faces the wall, to see how it reacts to the product.
How to use Bio one™ to remove cat urine from a leather couch:
- Read the Bio one™ instructions and any instructions that relate to your leather furniture before treatment.
- Locate the stain. If the urine is still wet, wipe off any excess.
- Make sure the spray is directed at the contaminated area and then spray until damp.
- Leave for 5-10 minutes.
- Wipe off any excess product with a damp cloth.
- Leave the sofa or leather until it is completely dry.
- If necessary, re-apply Bio one™ to treat stubborn stains and smells.
How does Bio one™ help with odours?
Removing the bacteria from leather is a key part of the cleaning process. This is what also helps to get rid of any cat urine smell and other lasting unpleasant odours. Some products or air fresheners simply mask smells whereas Bio one™ eliminates them by tackling the root cause of the odour causing the bad bacteria. On top of that, it contains natural lemon and orange oils as well as neroli flower to leave your couch or house smelling pleasantly fresh.
Is Bio one™ safe for pets?
Bio one™ is a 100% natural product that is designed for and completely safe to use with pets. The product can eliminate cat urine smells as well as other unpleasant scents caused by all animals and pets. The chemical free formula is eco-friendly and vegan, so you can be sure that you’re looking after our planet every time you use it.
How do you get dried cat urine out of leather?
1. Find the stain with a blacklight
When cat urine is dried, although you can smell it, you might not be able to see where the stain is. If you need help figuring out where to treat the leather, you can use a blacklight. Blacklights use ultraviolet rays to illuminate the proteins in urine so you can see exactly where they are. This is especially helpful if you have dark furniture and carpets that hide marks or you’re trying to clean a house where the old stains have faded over time.
2. Be careful with leather
Some of the dyes used on leather couches are water soluble. That means if you use a cleaning product on them, the colour might come off or fade if the dye runs. Find out how your leather couch was made to check if any treatments have been applied that will protect it. It’s possible to test the cleaning product on the leather but this could leave a mark. Avoid doing this where possible and always read full instructions before you treat the sofa.
Why does cat urine stain leather sofas?
Cat urine is very acidic. If it comes into contact with leather, it’s quite likely that it will leave a blemish and could permanently affect the colour. However, it’s still important to treat the contaminated area to remove any lasting smells and bacteria. That means your leather couch will be hygienic and clean so you can still enjoy lounging on it.
What are enzymes?
Don’t be fooled to think that because enzymes are natural they are less effective than chemical cleaners. Enzymes are nature’s very own powerful cleaning tools. Making them the go to choice for pet owners who do not want to spray harmful chemicals around their pets and their home.
Simply put, enzymes are all around us performing millions of important tasks in our bodies and in nature every single day. They are a type of protein that act like a biological catalyst to speed up the break down of organic compounds.
Similarly to how saliva, (which contains enzymes), initiates the digestion process by breaking down food in our mouths, cleaning enzymes use the same ‘enzymatic digestion’ to effectively break down and eradicate the organic proteins present in urine, faeces, vomit, drool, dirt, food, and more.
This process not only makes cleaning easier but also prevents the growth of bad bacteria – the root cause of those unpleasant odours – in the air, on surfaces, and within the fibres of your soft furnishings.
Try out Bio one™ today, vomit and the other nasties is what nature created enzymes for.
