What could possibly go wrong with your carpet? For many people, spilling milk on the carpet isn’t a big deal, at least not until things get serious.
Milk can easily seep deep into carpet fibres due to their high absorbency, leaving persistent stains and unpleasant odours.
At first, you may not notice the stains or foul odour. However, over time, the bacteria in milk will grow and convert the natural sugars into acetic and lactic acid. As a result, the stained area will turn yellow and emit a sour odour.
The presence of protein is what makes milk stains on carpets so difficult to remove. Protein usually hardens when it dries out. Hardened proteins are difficult to rehydrate. But don’t give up hope!
You can remove the milk stains and restore the smell of your carpet with patience and the proper carpet cleaning methods. That is why we have put together this comprehensive guide on how to remove milk stains and smells from carpets.
How to remove milk from carpet
If the milk spills on your carpet take the following steps:
Do’s
- Always blot as much of the spill as possible before beginning to rub when you are certain that all of the liquid has been removed.
- Always perform a test on a small inconspicuous area before cleaning the entire carpet to see how the material will react.
- Use an enzyme-based cleaner to eliminate odours and stains.
Don’ts
- When cleaning, avoid using warm water. High temperatures help the stain set and intensify the odour.
- Never combine chlorine bleach with ammonia. It’s extremely dangerous, and the fumes produced are toxic.
Firstly, begin stirring! To activate the enzymes, add a small amount of Bio one™ to your mix + spray bottle (or any spray bottle you have on hand), top up with normal tap water, and shake well. By multiplying millions of enzymes, this will ‘power up’ your freshwater.
Because Bio one™ is concentrated, a single bottle will last a long time, reducing plastic waste.
Then, to get the most out of your enzymes, keep the surface damp and allow plenty of time for them to work. These grime-eating enzymes biodegrade dirt, melt away stubborn grease stains, and eliminate odours and airborne odours when given time to work. These enzymes don’t care if they’re used on upholstery or hard surfaces. Simply ensure that the area has been thoroughly scraped or blotted before spraying liberally. Allow the spray to sit for at least five minutes (or longer) to allow the enzymes to work. It is always good to agitate carefully the fibres on the fabric once you spray just to get the Bio one™ into the fibres of the carpet upholstery. You can spray as much as you want because it’s mostly water. Your super spray will continue to work for up to 24-48 hours after being spritzed.
The enzymes used are naturally occurring bacteria. They biodegrade and break down dirt quickly; all you have to remember is that as long as the area remains damp, and the odour remover is working.
What are enzymes?
Don’t be fooled to think that because enzymes are natural they are less effective than chemical cleaners. Enzymes are nature’s very own powerful cleaning tools. Making them the go to choice for customers who do not want to spray harmful chemicals around their home.
Simply put, enzymes are all around us performing millions of important tasks in our bodies and in nature every single day. They are a type of protein that act like a biological catalyst to speed up the break down of organic compounds.
Similarly to how saliva, (which contains enzymes), initiates the digestion process by breaking down food in our mouths, cleaning enzymes use the same ‘enzymatic digestion’ to effectively break down and eradicate the organic proteins present in urine, faeces, vomit, drool, dirt, food, and more.
This process not only makes cleaning easier but also prevents the growth of bad bacteria – the root cause of those unpleasant odours – in the air, on surfaces, and within the fibres of your soft furnishings.
Try out Bio one™ today, vomit and the other nasties is what nature created enzymes for.
