How to remove smell from shoes

After a strenuous summer workout, you could notice that your shoes are starting to smell. Read our guide to help tackle this problem.

Have you ever taken off your shoes and smelled something awful? Or perhaps you were going to slip on a pair of your favourite pair of shoes when the odour nearly knocked you over? Though some shoe types are more likely to smell than others, it can happen to anyone.

Why do my shoes smell so bad?

Even sneakers with plenty of airflow and mesh panels have a tendency to retain some odour after a run. The bacteria that cause the odour is actually present in your socks, shoes, and feet.

Feet have 250,000 sweat glands and so the sweat and heat produced by those glands in a shoe create an ideal environment for bacterial growth. Killing the bothersome bacteria dwelling in your shoes is just as vital as getting rid of that bad odour on your running trainers.

You must eradicate the bacteria that is creating the odour in your shoes if you want to get rid of the smell. Thoroughly cleaning them and practising appropriate shoe and foot hygiene will help prevent feet from smelling.

Eliminating the smell

Dealing with the moisture problem is the key to getting rid of the smell from shoes. A deodorising spray is frequently used to merely try to combat the scent itself, although this will only mask it. By eliminating the moisture, you may eliminate the odour-producing bacteria and stop it at its source.

How to remove smell from shoes

  1. Put your shoes out in the sun for a few hours if it’s warm and sunny outside. They can become dried out and less inviting to microorganisms that cause odours.
  2. You may also utilise your freezer to aid with shoe odour eradication! They should first be put in a sealed bag, which you should then store in your freezer for the night. The odour-causing bacteria won’t survive the freezing temperatures, making this a simple and effective intervention.
  3. Use a good enzyme cleaner to remove odours for shoes is a more permanent solution.

The process

Bio one™ conveniently comes in a concentrated form, so one bottle will last a long time- helping to reduce plastic waste and save you money. The enzymes used are harmless bacteria derived from nature, which biodegrade and break down bacteria to eliminate odours.

To activate the enzymes, add a small amount of Bio one™ to your mix + spray bottle (or any spray bottle you have on hand), top up with normal tap water, and shake well. By multiplying millions of enzymes, this will ‘power up’ your freshwater.

Because Bio one™ is concentrated, a single bottle will last a long time, reducing plastic waste.

Then, to get the most out of your enzymes, keep the shoe damp with the mixed spray and allow plenty of time for them to work. These grime-eating enzymes biodegrade dirt and eliminate odours and airborne odours when given time to work. Allow the spray to sit for at least ten minutes (or longer) to allow the enzymes to work. You can spray as much as you want because it’s mostly water. Your super spray will continue to work for up to 24-48 hours after being spritzed.

The enzymes used are naturally occurring bacteria. They biodegrade and break down bacteria quickly; all you have to remember is that as long as the area remains damp, and the odour remover is working.

What are enzymes?

Don’t be fooled to think that because enzymes are natural they are less effective than chemical cleaners. Enzymes are nature’s very own powerful cleaning tools. Making them the go to choice for customers who do not want to spray harmful chemicals around their home and on their personal items.

Simply put, enzymes are all around us performing millions of important tasks in our bodies and in nature every single day. They are a type of protein that act like a biological catalyst to speed up the break down of organic compounds.

Similarly to how saliva, (which contains enzymes), initiates the digestion process by breaking down food in our mouths, cleaning enzymes use the same ‘enzymatic digestion’ to effectively break down and eradicate the organic proteins present in urine, faeces, vomit, drool, dirt, food, and more.

This process not only makes cleaning easier but also prevents the growth of bad bacteria – the root cause of those unpleasant odours – in the air, on surfaces, and within the fibres of your soft furnishings.

Try out Bio one™ today, vomit and the other nasties is what nature created enzymes for.
