How to clean a potty

Between 18 and 30 months is when toddlers tend to move on from nappies and start toilet training. With this new milestone, comes new challenges. And one of them is making sure their precious potty is spotless and safe for them to use…

Moving from the safety of nappies to a potty is a big deal for our little ones, especially as some find the switch simpler than others. The most important thing is that they go at their own pace and even enjoy the process of trying out their new grown-up throne.

As potties hold poo and wee, they are often a breeding ground for bacteria and odours. So amongst all the mishaps and toilet tantrums, try our simple method for keeping it clean.

How to clean a potty

To make sure your toddler’s potty is germ-free, you’ll need to use some powerful but child-friendly cleaning power. In fact, we’re creating a new product range that will be perfect for this job. They’re coming soon, so keep an eye on our website and sign up to our newsletter for updates. In the meantime, you can use Bio One™ to disinfect, banish bad bacteria and eliminate odours.

1. Empty contents

Your first step is to get rid of whatever is inside the potty. Carry it carefully to the loo and tip the contents, wee or poo, down and flush. Tackling the mess straight away means bacteria and nasty pongs have less time to develop.

2. Rinse

Next, you need to rinse the potty bowl with hot water. Use the sink or bath tap to fill it up, swirl the potty and then tip that water down the toilet. This quick wash will make sure you’ve loosened and rinsed off any final bits of mess.

3. Clean

It’s time to grab your Bio One™ Baby + Toddler surface cleaner to kickstart the cleaning process. Mix 10mls of the concentrated solution with 100ml of water or use the markers on mix + spray bottles. Give it a mix and then spray the potty all over. Make sure the entire area is completely covered, especially if it has separate parts like a loo seat or cover. Leave the formula to soak in for five to ten minutes then wipe with a damp cloth.

4. Dry

We recommend leaving the potty to air dry naturally. This is because Bio One™ contains enzymes which carry on working their cleaning magic when surfaces are damp. If your little one looks like they want to use it again soon, you could wipe away excess moisture with a paper towel. (You don’t want a wet bum to put them off using it).

How do I keep my kids potty clean?

Every time your tot goes to the toilet, if you follow the above steps, you’ll keep the potty clean and hygienic. If you struggle with the mess, you can also try disposable potty liners. They attach to the potty just like a bin bag on a bin. Once soiled, you just take them out and throw them away. To protect the planet and reduce waste, choose biodegradable liners instead of standard plastic.

What kills toilet seat germs?

Wiping down a toilet or potty seat might make it look clean but it won’t have eliminated germs. And thanks to what we use them for, toilets are especially prone to nasty bacteria. To kill the germs, you’ll need an effective cleaner.

Bio One™ is just right for the job. It’s full of naturally activating enzymes which work with live friendly bacteria to destroy waste particles. Enzymatic cleaners are expert at disinfecting surfaces without using harsh or toxic chemicals. Instead, they use the power of nature. The ingredients are 100% organic, plant-based and safe for use around kids (and pets too).

Potty training tips

Toilet training your toddler can be challenging. But there are a few simple tips and tricks you can follow to make sure your child is confident and comfortable:

Get your little one used to the idea

Even before your toddler is ready to use it, pop the potty in the bathroom or another visible spot. This will mean it feels familiar to them. It’s also a good idea to change their nappy in the bathroom, whenever you can, so they build an association with that room and going the loo.

Sit them on the potty

Make sitting on the potty part of everyday life. When you change their nappy, pop them on the seat. Digestion is often kickstarted when their tummy is full. So after meals, take them straight to it. If they often go to the toilet at the same time, make this nappy-free time and encourage them to try the potty.

Don’t make a fuss

Accidents will definitely happen. The best thing to do is keep calm and be patient. If they feel upset or anxious, they’ll be more worried next time. Comfort them and deal with the mess without any fuss.

Praise them

When your little one makes positive progress, praising them will help encourage that behaviour next time.  Give them a smile and gentle well done. You could try a sticker chart to mark down all their positive potty achievements.

What are enzymes?

Don’t be fooled to think that because enzymes are natural they are less effective than chemical cleaners. Enzymes are nature’s very own powerful cleaning tools. Making them the go to choice for parents who do not want to spray harmful chemicals around their children and their home.

Simply put, enzymes are all around us performing millions of important tasks in our bodies and in nature every single day. They are a type of protein that act like a biological catalyst to speed up the break down of organic compounds.

Similarly to how saliva, (which contains enzymes), initiates the digestion process by breaking down food in our mouths, cleaning enzymes use the same ‘enzymatic digestion’ to effectively break down and eradicate the organic proteins present in urine, faeces, vomit, drool, dirt, food, and more.

This process not only makes cleaning easier but also prevents the growth of bad bacteria – the root cause of those unpleasant odours – in the air, on surfaces, and within the fibres of your soft furnishings.

Try out Bio one today, vomit and the other nasties is what nature created enzymes for.
