How to keep bird cage from smelling

Birds are often colourful, usually highly intelligent and always unique pets. Famous for being mimics, they can fill your house with chatter and bird song. However, they can also fill your house with mess.

In the UK, we love keeping birds as pets. From the common cockatoo to bright budgerigars and talkative parrots – they’re full of personality and there’s a different breed to suit everyone. However, just like wild birds, they tend to open their bladder and bowels mid-flight – whenever and wherever they fancy.

So if you’re facing a bad smelling bird cage but you don’t know how to sort it, read our guide on how to keep it completely clean and fragrance-free.

How do you keep a bird cage clean?

The only way to keep your bird cage clean and get rid of bad smells is by deep cleaning it and any other surfaces your bird has touched, weed or pooped on. Deep clean the cage once a week and carry out other daily tasks like refreshing their liner, food and water. To fully remove the bad smells, instead of simply masking them, you need to use a specific pet odour eliminator . Enzyme cleaners, like Bio one™, are your most effective option. They remove pongs and lift stubborn stains to leave surfaces and fabrics odour-free, clean and hygienic.

Why is Bio one™ good at removing bird smells?

Bio one™uses a combination of organic, active enzymes and friendly bacteria to ingest 99% of bad bacteria and dirt which are the root cause of unpleasant odours. Bio one™ is all-natural, non-toxic and vegan. That makes it more eco-friendly than standard cleaning products and totally safe for use around our precious pets. Whatever the stain, it can remove marks caused by any animal mess like dirt, food, faeces and urine. Plus, it contains natural lemon and orange oils to leave hard or soft surfaces smelling fresh and sweet.

How do I get rid of a bird cage smell?

Read our step-by-step guide on how to get rid of nasty bird cage smells with Bio one™:

  1. Remove any bedding, toys, equipment, mess and old food.
  2. To make sure you get rid of all stains and odours, it’s best to clean the whole cage instead of specific areas. Spray the entire cage (bars, roof, bottom) plus any furniture and toys thoroughly with Bio one™. Every surface needs to be damp with the product as that’s when the enzymes work their magic.
  3. Leave the product to work down into the material and soak for five to ten minutes.
  4. After the soaking time, check if the smells and stains have lifted. If they haven’t, respray the affected areas and leave for a further five minutes.
  5. Once Bio one™ has effectively cleaned the cage of marks and odours, wipe off any excess product and leave it to air dry.

Why does my bird cage stink?

All pets create a mess and bad smells because unlike us, they don’t use a toilet they can flush. It’s completely natural to have some scents coming from their homes as they wee, poo and eat in one relatively small space. Really unpleasant odours will be down to poor hygiene, so you need to up your cleaning game – tidying up after them straight away, regularly refreshing the bottom liner and deep cleaning weekly. Hormonal changes can alter your bird’s odour and if they’re unwell they might have stronger-smelling faeces or urine. If the intensity of the smell increases and you’re concerned, consider a vet visit.

What is the best thing to put on the bottom of a bird cage?

You need to refresh the bottom of your bird’s cage every day so it’s a good idea to choose something disposable. Paper or newspaper are your best bet and luckily newspaper no longer contains lead so it’s not toxic to any birds that love to nibble. Paper also lies flat so it’s easy to monitor your bird’s health by checking their droppings. Other liners like walnut shells or corn cob can be a breeding ground for bacteria and you should never use untreated wood chips or shavings as they’re toxic.

How often should you change bird cage liner?

You should remove and replace your bird’s liner every day. As we mentioned above, disposable bedding is simpler as you can peel off individual layers or if it’s soaked through you can throw it all away. If you refresh daily, it’s easier to keep track of their bowel movements and prevent any moisture build-up which can be harmful to your bird’s respiratory system.

How do you keep the area around a bird cage clean?

When they’re flying around, it’s not always easy for birds to contain their mess solely to in the cage. If an accident happens in the area around their house, sweep or vacuum up any hard poo or chunks of food then use Bio one™ enzyme cleaner – following the above cleaning steps. It works on carpet, clothes and soft furnishings but always check the instructions and try a hidden test area first to make sure it doesn’t remove dye or colour.

What are enzymes?

Don’t be fooled to think that because enzymes are natural they are less effective than chemical cleaners. Enzymes are nature’s very own powerful cleaning tools. Making them the go to choice for pet owners who do not want to spray harmful chemicals around their pets and their home.

Simply put, enzymes are all around us performing millions of important tasks in our bodies and in nature every single day. They are a type of protein that act like a biological catalyst to speed up the break down of organic compounds.

Similarly to how saliva, (which contains enzymes), initiates the digestion process by breaking down food in our mouths, cleaning enzymes use the same ‘enzymatic digestion’ to effectively break down and eradicate the organic proteins present in urine, faeces, vomit, drool, dirt, food, and more.

This process not only makes cleaning easier but also prevents the growth of bad bacteria – the root cause of those unpleasant odours – in the air, on surfaces, and within the fibres of your soft furnishings.

Try out Bio one™ today, vomit and the other nasties is what nature created enzymes for.
