All of us adore our rabbits. They enrich our lives, make wonderful companions, and are hilarious. However, when they are left to roam your living room and don’t quite make it to their hutch or litter box, accidents can happen.
The unpleasant smell that leftover rabbit urine can leave in your carpet is definitely not something we enjoy.
Most surfaces can be cleaned of rabbit pee using an enzyme cleaning solution. Tough stains or potent smells may need longer to remove. Depending on the type of surface that is soiled, you may need to take different methods to clean rabbit urine.
The sooner the urine stain is removed, the better. If you discover your rabbit’s pee right away after they urinated, you can thoroughly clean it without leaving any stains and with little effort. Rabbit urine can, however, do serious harm if left unattended for a long period. In extreme circumstances, it can destroy the timber beneath wooden floors by eating through varnish or leave persistent stains on carpets. Follow these recommendations to stop rabbit urine stains from becoming permanent.
Air out your home
Open all the windows and let the breeze carry some of the odour away. This rapidly allows the airflow in your home to eliminate the odour. This can do the trick if you need to get rid of the smell fast, however, in many cases, the odour will still linger.
Use an enzyme cleaner to eliminate the odour
There still may be a strong smell even after you have opened the windows. This may be because the smell is old, or bacteria is trapped in your carpet fibres. Therefore, for a permanent solution, you will have to clean the source of the smell. A pet odour eliminator like Bio one™ could be just what you need.
Cleaning rabbit urine stains from the carpet
Try to soak up the urine. The area will still be wet if you happen to catch your rabbit in the act. Using a towel or cloth, try to soak up as much urine as you can. This will stop the stain from getting worse. Always lightly wipe the stain rather than rubbing it into the leather or cloth interior to avoid the odour spreading or being further impregnated into the fibres.
Clean with an enzymatic solution
To get rid of any bacteria, an enzymatic cleaner like Bio one™ will break down the bacteria to get rid of the smell and stains. Because of this, enzyme cleaners are far more efficient than other types of cleaning supplies.
How to remove rabbit urine from your carpet using Bio one™
- Before treatment, read the Bio one™ directions.
- Find the odour or stain. Remove any extra liquid and residue by wiping it off if it’s still damp.
- Make sure the nozzle is directed at the contaminated area and spray until it is damp.
- We recommend leaving the cleaner to work for 5 to 10 minutes. However, the cleaner will continue to work for up to 24-48 hours once spritzed and while it remains damp.
- It is always good to agitate the fibres slightly on the fabric once you spray, just to get the Bio one™ into the fibres of the carpet upholstery
- With a damp cloth, remove any extra product.
- Open the windows to let the carpet dry.
- Reapply Bio one™ as necessary to treat tough odours and stains.
Removing urine stains from clothing and bedding
If rabbits have access to your pet or a pile of laundry, it’s not uncommon for them to decide to urinate in these areas. Since these tend to be places that smell like us, the rabbit will have an increased need to claim the areas by adding their own scent.
- Soak up urine if the stain is fresh. If you caught your rabbit in the act, you can reduce the chance of staining and spreading by soaking up as much of the urine as you can with a towel or cloth.
- Spray with enzyme cleaner. Use the enzyme cleaner on any soiled clothing or bedding sheets.
- Wait 5-10 minutes. Give the solution a few minutes to work on the urine stain.
- Blot up the stain. Use a separate dry cloth or towel to rub and blot up as much of the stain as you can.
- Place the soiled articles into the washing machine to clean them thoroughly.
- In some cases, if you don’t catch the urine spot right away, you may need to leave the enzyme cleaner on for longer or repeat the process again.
What are enzymes?
Don’t be fooled to think that because enzymes are natural they are less effective than chemical cleaners. Enzymes are nature’s very own powerful cleaning tools. Making them the go to choice for pet owners who do not want to spray harmful chemicals around their pets and their home.
Simply put, enzymes are all around us performing millions of important tasks in our bodies and in nature every single day. They are a type of protein that act like a biological catalyst to speed up the break down of organic compounds.
Similarly to how saliva, (which contains enzymes), initiates the digestion process by breaking down food in our mouths, cleaning enzymes use the same ‘enzymatic digestion’ to effectively break down and eradicate the organic proteins present in urine, faeces, vomit, drool, dirt, food, and more.
This process not only makes cleaning easier but also prevents the growth of bad bacteria – the root cause of those unpleasant odours – in the air, on surfaces, and within the fibres of your soft furnishings.
Try out Bio one™ today, vomit and the other nasties is what nature created enzymes for.
